I'm really into this album and this version has a wide, open sound with great instrument separation, punchy lows and mids. Couldn't be happier with my newest addition to the collection.
Absolutely, five stars. Likely my top pick for a U2 album. You won't have caught these tracks on the radio, so they're still super fresh to the ears. The pressing on these awesome Island sunrise/sunset labels is spot on. Musically, it's phenomenal, pure, wide-open rock that packs a punch like no other. Gloria is just out of this world. I've come across the idea that many bands' finest album is the one before their breakout hit. For U2, you could make the case that War was their big break, leaving October as their masterpiece. I'm inclined to agree!
I've got a copy with vinyl matrix Var.2 and a sleeve that's missing the printer on the back cover (just like in this other DGS version: https://www.discogs.com/release/22515938-U2-October). Has anyone else come across the same inconsistency? Or could it be a "mix" that was put together by someone manually at the record store where I picked it up back in the 80's...
Wow, this album sounds fantastic. The sound is rich and expansive. The music is amazing. People often overlook early U2, but don't miss out on it!
Back when music wasn't as neatly categorized as it is now, before shows like 120 Minutes, there was this Irish Christian new wave band that all the hipsters were buzzing about. Their albums were a rarity, only played on college radio and that one low-fi new wave station tucked away at the end of the AM dial. War hadn't dropped yet, and back then, just knowing who U2 was gave you some serious street cred, like you were part of this underground alternative scene. It was like you had a personal claim on U2, since hardly anyone knew about them. But once War came out, that version of U2 was gone for good. Still, it was an incredible time while it lasted.
