Product Description

Lou Reed, the iconic artist known for his groundbreaking work with The Velvet Underground, took a radical departure from his signature sound with "Metal Machine Music." Released on July 1, 1975, under Buddha Records, this album is a daring exploration of avant-garde noise and experimental rock. Clocking in at just over an hour, the album is divided into four parts, each a dense, immersive soundscape of feedback, distortion, and industrial clatter.

"Metal Machine Music" is a bold statement from Lou Reed, pushing the boundaries of what rock music can be. The album's genres, often debated among critics, span from glam rock to proto-punk, but it defies easy categorization. It's a raw, unfiltered experience that challenges the listener to engage with sound in a new way. Reed's use of feedback and electronic textures creates a hypnotic, almost meditative quality, making it a unique piece in his discography.

This album is not just a collection of songs but a sonic experiment that reflects Reed's fearless approach to artistry. It's a testament to his willingness to explore uncharted territories, even if it meant alienating some of his audience. For those willing to dive in, "Metal Machine Music" offers a rewarding, if demanding, listening experience that continues to influence experimental and noise rock artists to this day.

This 2025 Reissue 50th Anniversary 2LP set is pressed on Black vinyl.

How do we keep reviews authentic?

Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.

  • Blu-Ray Upgrades?

    5 out of 5 stars
    GixRagwdudr11 January 2026United States🇺🇸

I own the DVD-A version, but would I spot any upgrades or changes on the Blu-Ray? (I absolutely freakin' adore this album)

  • Hidden Sounds Emerge

    5 out of 5 stars
    uxycelwic9 December 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

It reminds me of those 3D Stereogram images, where initially you just notice a jumble of colors and patterns. But if you can somehow focus beyond the picture, perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of the hidden image emerging from the mess. Not many people can do it. It's exactly like this album, but with sound instead.

  • Lou Reed's Bold Declaration

    3 out of 5 stars
    Iqtozifup6 December 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

This ain't no music, just a declaration. I ain't never seen no reviews talkin' 'bout their fav track, just 'bout the rightness or wrongness of it. Fact is, even if the music ain't all that, it adds more to Lou Reed's legacy than if he'd done one of his regular albums. So, whether by chance or plan, it's a win.

  • Noise Album Pioneer

    5 out of 5 stars
    ezibrgay2325 October 2025United States🇺🇸

This album stands out from any other 70s release and is a noise album that has inspired countless artists since. Naturally, I'm awarding it five stars. It's the Sgt Pepper's of the noise music world.

  • Divided by Music

    5 out of 5 stars
    xixrmekk29 June 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm absolutely in love with it. My wife, on the other hand, can't stand it. So, it's just perfect for us. She's even demanding a shelf for albums she wants banned, so they're never played when she's around. The sound of it somehow makes her furious, while I'm utterly captivated. She even offered to buy the record off me so she could destroy it, but I wouldn't accept her money. When each side of the album ends, it feels like a relief from choking. Like waking up from a horrifyingly real nightmare, alive and breathing heavily.
