Product Description

Television's debut album, "Marquee Moon," released on February 8, 1977, under Elektra Records, is a seminal work that bridges the gap between punk's raw energy and the more complex, melodic structures of art rock and new wave. Clocking in at 45 minutes, this album is a testament to Television's innovative approach to music, blending proto-punk's urgency with post-punk's introspection and art rock's sophistication.

The album opens with "See No Evil," setting the stage for the intricate guitar work and poetic lyrics that define Television's sound. Tracks like "Venus" and the title track "Marquee Moon" showcase the band's ability to craft songs that are both accessible and deeply layered, with extended instrumental passages that highlight their virtuosity. "Friction" and "Elevation" further demonstrate their knack for blending raw energy with melodic depth, while "Guiding Light" and "Prove It" offer moments of introspection and reflection.

"Torn Curtain" closes the album on a high note, encapsulating the band's unique blend of styles and setting the tone for their future work. "Marquee Moon" is not just an album; it's a journey through the evolving landscape of late 1970s rock music, offering a glimpse into the creative genius of Television. Whether you're a fan of punk, art rock, or new wave, this album is a must-listen, showcasing the band's innovative spirit and enduring influence.

This 2025 Limited Edition Reissue LP is housed in a gatefold, pressed on 180g vinyl.

Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.

  • Powerful, Detailed Sound

    5 out of 5 stars
    jejwfcao21 December 2025United States🇺🇸

Alright, let me tell you, this one's a scorcher! LOUD and POWERFUL!! Wow, just wow! Verlaine's guitars will blow your speakers away and the midrange detail is like ice. Bass punches and fades perfectly. Vocals sit right on top, crystal clear. My Rhino Hi Fidelity version is now collecting dust. This was mastered at Sterling (stamped in the runout groove) by Lee Hulko and Greg Calbi. Top-notch recommendation! [Tech specs in my profile]

  • Top Pick Reissue

    5 out of 5 stars
    jijdgze30 November 2025United States🇺🇸

This might just be my top pick among Rhino's reissues. A perfect album, and this version really brings it to life.

  • Masterpiece Pressing

    5 out of 5 stars
    beqdefor10 November 2025United States🇺🇸

This is an excellent pressing of a genuine masterpiece. I'm truly puzzled by the few negative remarks regarding the pressing. The music, in itself, is absolutely amazing.

  • Worthwhile but overrated punk

    4 out of 5 stars
    ljekvd1 October 2025United States🇺🇸

Should I have gotten this album? I picked it up when it first came out in Rhino's High Fidelity line, thinking the buzz meant it was a must-have punk record. I hadn't heard any of their music before that. It's alright, but I'm not sure it's on par with Ramones, Cars, Sex Pistols and the like. Perhaps you had to be there to truly appreciate it.

  • Brighter, Balanced, Recommended

    5 out of 5 stars
    brmos318 September 2025United States🇺🇸

Fantastic pressing, crisp and balanced, the original recording was a bit bright, but this version is even brighter, yet it's highly recommended.

About Television

Television, not to be confused with the telecommunication medium, is a pioneering band that has left an indelible mark on the music scene. Emerging in the mid-1970s, they are often credited as one of the key players in the proto-punk and post-punk movements, blending raw energy with poetic lyrics and intricate guitar work. Their sound, which also touches on art rock and new wave, is characterized by the distinctive, jagged guitar playing of Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine, creating a unique and influential style. With their debut album "Marquee Moon," Television set a new standard for alternative music, showcasing Verlaine's cryptic, literary lyrics and the band's tight, dynamic performances. Their music continues to resonate with fans and inspire new generations of musicians, making Television a vital and enduring force in the world of rock.
