Jamie Lidell sounds like a futuristic blend of Prince and Morris Day, as if they had a fair-skinned kid in 2020. This album is like groovy violet raindrop ice cream palaces, man!
Jamie Lidell's self-titled record ventures into a fresh territory: electro-funk. The 80s synths on "I'm Selfish" blend seamlessly with his voice, while "Big Love" feels like it's been transported directly from the 70s. "Do Yourself A Faver" tones down the electronic elements (though not the funk), but the electronics return on "You Naked." He evokes Stevie Wonder in "Blaming Something," but in a fascinating turn, "Why_Ya_Why" leans more towards a shadowy New Orleans-inspired jazz with a dash of video game influence. The video game vibes take on a heartfelt soulfulness with "So Cold," and "In Your Mind" brings us back around to the electro-funk. It's an exciting new direction for Lidell.
