Jamie Lidell transitions from Warp Records to his own label, Jajulin, with his new album, BUILDING A BEGINNING. The title track immediately dives into a soulful vibe, while "Julian" amps up the energy. "How Did I Live Before Your Love" has a smooth, slinky groove enhanced by the wah-wah guitar, whereas "Walk Right Back" is more upbeat. Notably, Lidell shifts away from the electronic and studio effects that characterized his Warp albums, opting for a more live, classic 60s soul sound. However, tracks like "I Stay Inside" with its filtered horns and layered vocals prove he's not strictly adhering to this new style. Devoted romantics might be drawn to "I Live to Make Your Smile" and "Find It Hard to Say" for their intimate moments, but could also appreciate the minimalistic "In Love and Alone" or the gospel-tinged "Motionless."
