In COMPASS, Jamie Lidell revisits the electronic/soul fusion that initially catapulted him into the spotlight with MULTIPLY. Yet, he also nods to his earlier, more unpredictable IDM roots—"Completely Exposed" seems to bridge these two realms, while "Your Sweet Boom" blends both organic and digital elements. "She Needs Me" dives back into classic funk territory, much like the organ-driven "I Can Love Again." But Lidell isn't afraid to explore new avenues, such as the disco-electro-beat of "I Wanna Be Your Telephone," which feels like a track Peaches might have lent her vocals to, though it's actually Lidell's frequent collaborator Nikka Costa. He even experiments with a more intense rock sound on "You Are Waking" and acoustic songwriting on the title track, though it eventually veers into its own unique space. The depth and intensity of "Coma Chameleon" give it a sharp edge, while the slow, heavy rhythm of "Big Drift" carries a somber, almost oppressive weight. "You See My Light" closes the album with a lo-fi feel, and while Lidell is clearly experimenting with new directions, he might benefit from a more reliable compass to steer him.
