Hailing from the classic era of Vinyl Me Please, we have Donald Byrd's 'Fancy Free'. Though I don't possess an original pressing to do a side-by-side comparison, this copy sounds fantastic and is impeccably pressed. It's a truly soothing album to unwind with. Highly recommended! I just got my hands on an original van gelder copy in very good shape, and let me tell you, comparing it to my recent VMP re-issue, there's no comparison. I've raved about my re-issue before, but the electric piano intro on A2, I Love the Girl, is just so much more immersive on the original. It's got a depth and richness that the re-issue just can't match. The drums and Donald Byrd's trumpet lack the punch and excitement of the van gelder pressing. The cymbals and horns seem to pop more on the original press. In my opinion, the original press is the way to go, even with some surface noise if you can handle it. “Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise.
