Come With Us" has to be one of my all-time favorite albums by The Chemical Brothers. "Star Guitar" is absolutely amazing. I'm also a huge fan of "Come With Us", "Hoops", "Denmark", and "The Test". It's a perfect score from me!
Decent pressing overall, not much to complain about apart from the labels being slightly off-center. Initially, it caught me off guard, but thankfully the actual disc is perfectly centered.
Finding a new sonic direction after the big beat genre's decline in the early 2000s couldn't have been a walk in the park for The Chemical Brothers. Many acts that embodied this style, often represented by just one or two albums, faded into obscurity (Cirrus, Propellerheads, The Wiseguys, Monkey Mafia, Lunatic Calm, Dirty Beatniks, Hardknox, to name a few). Meanwhile, more established bands like The Crystal Method, Freestylers, Fatboy Slim, and Junkie XL managed to stay relevant by evolving with the times and updating their production techniques. The Prodigy, however, stood out by maintaining their signature heavy beats from the get-go. Among all the acts mentioned, The Chemical Brothers have consistently pushed creativity to its limits, branching out from big beat's core roots while never losing their unique touch. As for "Come With Us," it's certainly a solid effort. "Dig Your Own Hole" was dark and intense, "Surrender" brought a more accessible party vibe, and "Come With Us" completely shed its darkness in favor of an upbeat atmosphere. I never get tired of the violins kicking off "Come With Us," even if the rest of the track isn't necessarily their most inspired work. "It Began In Afrika" is a great tribal party starter that pairs well with Leftfield's "Afro Ride." "Galaxy Bounce" has funky vibes and was featured in several commercials, notably the "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" movie soundtrack and the PES 2010 game OST. "Star Guitar" has a dreamy atmosphere and one of the best music videos ever, thanks to Michel Gondry's work. "Hoops" has strong Beatles vibes, thanks to a sample from The Association's "Round Again." "The State We're In" is the traditional peaceful interlude featuring Beth Orton. "Denmark" has a funky bassline in the first third, a build-up in the second, and crazy trumpets in the final third. Not many songs feature level crossing sirens, but The Chemical Brothers included them in "Pioneer Skies." Lastly, "The Test" is the closest to the big beat sound on this album, with a lovely outro that fades away. One of my favorites from 2002, alongside "Burnin' Sneakers" by Bomfunk MC's, "Community Service" by The Crystal Method, Paul Oakenfold's "Bunkka," and Cirrus's "Counterfeit.
Some parts are a bit boring, it kicks off decently though. "Come With Us", "It Began in Afrika", and "Denmark" stand out for me. It's alright, just alright, nothing that'll make you jump up and down with joy.
With "COME WITH US," The Chemical Brothers mostly bid farewell to the 'big beat' sound of their first two albums, embracing a 'big room' IDM style. The title track's hefty beat blends into delicate strings, wrapped up with a funky bassline, while "It Began in Afrika" is a tribal anthem infused with acid, complete with some obvious wildcat samples. Yet, to nod to their past, "Galaxy Bounce" takes us back to their hip-hop era, and "Hoops" dives into soothing psychedelia before ramping up with breaks. Meanwhile, "My Elastic Eye" sits quietly in its own space, and Beth Orton's return on the soft "The State We're In" ends with a kick drum. "Pioneer Skies" is a dazzling yet confusing track, and "The Test" attempts to revive their crossover energy with vocals from Richard Ashcroft. But the standout is the infectious "Star Guitar," a euphoric groover that hints at tech-house but stands on its own. Absolutely, I'm along for the ride with them!
