Imagine this: you're a 60-year-old iconic country-folk singer, nearing the end of your career, sitting in a dimly lit backstage area after a concert. Suddenly, a young, wild-bearded man, about half your age, approaches you. You recognize him... ah, yes. He's the guy who produced "Walk This Way," that strange song by Aerosmith and some rappers that came out a few years back. An odd mix, but it became a hit. To your surprise, this bearded youngster expresses interest in producing your next album! Initially, you're hesitant. You're not sure he'll grasp your music, but hey, you've got nothing to lose, so you decide to give it a shot with this hippie. The outcome? The beginning of a lifelong friendship and a series of albums that will be considered among your best work. These albums honor your past while also pushing your boundaries, making you cover songs by Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and even Glenn Danzig! Because, as history has shown, the first of these albums, fittingly titled "American Recordings," remains a late masterpiece in Johnny Cash's discography. You need to hear the sincerity pouring out of Johnny's voice and guitar, how his voice cracks here and there, yet still commands attention with its deep, resonant tone as he sings about everything, from the humorous "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" to the reflective, spiritual, and mournful tones of "Why Me Lord?", "Redemption", or "Oh Bury Me Not", contrasting with the harsh and grim lyrics of "Deliah's Gone"… as only a man who has lived a long, full life can. "American Recordings" brilliantly reintroduced Johnny Cash to a generation of music lovers who didn't quite realize how much they owed to his attitude, talent, and authenticity.
The whole collection of The American Recordings is absolutely brilliant, and every single time, no matter what I'm up to, I have to pause and just immerse myself in the music. I've found the CDs to be top-notch quality, they play seamlessly, the audio is superb, Johnny Cash's vocals are stunning, and the recordings are bursting with incredible vitality. The booklets are well-made and visually appealing. My only wish is to have a vinyl version, as it's the best for my ears. I highly recommend it for listening. Enjoy...Played on: Denon DCD-1550AR, Digital Coax, Technics SU-G700M2, Yamaha NS-777

I've found the CDs to be top-notch in quality, they play seamlessly, the audio is superb, Johnny Cash's vocals are stunning, and the recordings are bursting with energy. The booklets are well-made and visually appealing. My only hope is for a vinyl release, as that's what my ears prefer. I'd definitely recommend it for a listen. This album deserves so much better. The pressing is truly disappointing. I'm really hoping for a better repress that does this fantastic album the justice it deserves.
To start, take out the black innersleeve and swap it for one with a poly lining. Next, give the record a good clean with disco antistat. Final step: Bask in the joy of a pop-free record, crafted by a true expert :)
