Johnny Cash's entire American Recordings series is absolutely phenomenal. Whenever I put it on, regardless of what I'm up to, I have to pause and just immerse myself in the music. The CDs are top-notch, they play seamlessly, the audio is superb, and Cash's voice is truly captivating. The energy in these recordings is just incredible. The booklets are well-made and visually appealing. My only wish is for a vinyl release, as that's what my ears truly love. I wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone looking to listen. Amazing album. It's a treat listening to the iconic Johnny Cash performing these tracks. What an unmistakable voice he had. Lovely rendition of 'I Won't Back Down' featuring Tom Petty on backing vocals. The sound quality is excellent. A must-own for any Johnny Cash enthusiast.
Kicking off with the reassuring tones of Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne's “I Won’t Back Down”, the third installment of Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin’s American Recordings series, aptly titled “Solitary Man”, brought a more somber, almost desolate atmosphere to the collection. Four years after “Unchained”, you can sense that age and Johnny's recent health issues began to take a toll on his voice, making it more delicate. You can truly feel that it's an elderly man singing here. This shift is also evident in the song selection: the pair stuck to the series' formula, blending Cash’s original tracks (“Field Of Diamonds”, “Before My Time”, “Country Trash”, and “I’m Leaving Now”) with covers of songs from diverse origins, ranging from Neil Diamond’s titular track and Nick Cave’s “The Mercy Seat” to U2’s unexpected hit “One”. However, I find that most of these songs carry a mournful quality, particularly Will Oldham’s “I See A Darkness”, Dennis Turner’s “Mary Of The Wild Moor”, and “Wayfaring Stranger”. Cash's delivery of these songs is deeply moving and often introspective and reflective. Naturally, Cash once again made each song his own, as he consistently did throughout the American Recordings series. Despite the noticeable frailty in his voice, it remains powerful and commanding, far surpassing what one might expect from a man of his age and health, even reaching a booming intensity reminiscent of his prime at times. Once again, Cash is supported by fellow musicians and admirers, notably Tom Petty on “I Won’t Back Down” and the title track, and, to great effect, his beloved wife June Carter Cash joins him on “Field Of Diamonds”. In summary, another commendable addition to the extraordinary series of albums that provided Cash with a remarkable finale to his career and life.
Four years post-UNCHAINED, and following a string of health problems, Cash's vocals were clearly less powerful, yet still full of emotional depth. This Canadian version seems to be a fresh pressing of the 2014 reissue, with the record being flat, pristine, and silent, and the music boasting an authentic purity, with a cozy, intimate sound. The copy I got was brand new and spins without any detectable surface noise.
I've got the one with the printed inside, and it's an MPO pressing too... got it from the big A.
