American Caesar" stands out as my absolute favorite Iggy Pop solo record, hands down! Iggy was re-energized by the grunge movement, which clearly pushed him to craft a raw and edgy rock album. It's amusing that Iggy even included a parental advisory warning right on the album's rough artwork! This record was perfectly timed for its release but didn't receive as much recognition as his previous 1990 album "Brick By Brick," which got some airplay for its punk-pop track "Candy." Maybe because bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam were dominating the scene, but those same bands knew Iggy was welcome to join their party anytime. For his second album on Virgin Records, Iggy collaborated with Eric Schermerhorn, fresh off working with David Bowie on the Tin Machine project. Schermerhorn was the perfect match for Iggy, helping him create a masterpiece and bringing back the danger and vulnerability to his songs. The album isn't all aggressive and intense; it has some tender moments too, like "Highway Song" and "Social Life," but with a proper rugged edge! The production, thanks to Malcolm Burn, is spot on and still sounds fresh and timeless, which is another reason why I think it's his best solo album. "Wild America," "Plastic & Concrete," "Fuckin’ Alone," "Sickness," "Boogie Boy," the wild Stooges vibe in "Caesar," and the bonus track closer "Girls Of NY" (on some CDs but only on the original UK vinyl!) are just a few of the many standout tracks here! Oh, and there's a pretty heavy version of "Louie Louie" that sounds like it was mastered extra loud compared to the other tracks! This is also Iggy's longest album, clocking in at over 71 minutes! I wish they had included a few more songs from the excellent b-sides from these sessions too! Easily Iggy's finest work! I was a huge vinyl collector even during the decline of vinyl, and I'm so glad I picked up this original pressing in 1993 and have taken great care of it. The double album came in a single sleeve and never included the lyrics and photo like the CD's liner notes, so I photocopied those notes and added them to my vinyl copy. This original UK vinyl pressing is incredibly powerful and dynamic and sounds amazing when played loud.
