It took me a long time to finally get into THE IDIOT, nearly half a century after it dropped. This is quite a gloomy album. It starts off with a bang, with "Sister Midnight" and "Nightclubbing" back-to-back. The tunes often have this strange, trance-like quality, especially on the final track, "Mass Production". I've got no issues with the quality of this pressing, the vinyl is smooth, spotless and hushed, the sound is a tad muddy, but that also fits the mood and atmosphere of the music. My copy plays with zero noticeable surface noise.
I encountered more surface noise, ticks, and crackles than anticipated from a fresh pressing. Cleaning the record didn't make much of a difference. It's quite audible even with a top-notch cartridge and stylus setup. Could be a result of the material quality used in the multi-color pressing.
Hey, I've got this version - Black RCA PL 12275, but it's got a different matrix run out. It's PL 12275 - 1 - A SIDE (IGGY PoP) and PL 12275 - 1 - B SIDE (IGGY PoP).
Once you give this album a proper clean, it's fantastic. It's got that real analog feel to it, in my opinion.
This version is quite good. Surprisingly, it's even better than my initial American copy and the 2017 remaster. Likely, the first UK and Japanese 1983 editions might still be superior.
