  • Thrilling Joy Division Vibes

Zombie Birdhouse is an absolute blast, a thrilling ride that gets your heart racing. It's the polar opposite of endless chatter, pretentious rambling, or audiophile nitpicking. Okay, maybe I've been guilty of that last one lately. But all that talk does hint at something special here, something history might have overlooked or not yet discovered. So don't think twice—grab a copy of Zombie Birdhouse. It's like Joy Division if they'd taken Ecstasy.

  • Iggy's Quintessential Masterpiece

Zombie Birdhouse" stands out as my top pick among Iggy's solo works. It's rather astonishing how often it escapes the notice of his fans. For me, it's the most quintessentially "Iggy" record he's put out. Definitely a contender for my Desert Island Discs!

  • Iggy Pop's Underrated Gem

    5 out of 5 stars

In my opinion, this album stands proudly alongside Iggy Pop's finest post-Stooges works, marking the conclusion of a pivotal chapter in his career. Following the Stooges, Iggy, with a helping hand from David Bowie, released 'Lust for Life' and 'The Idiot'. These albums are must-listens for any music enthusiast, not just for their fantastic tracks, but for representing a crucial and creative period for both Iggy and collaborators like Lou Reed and Brian Eno, living and working in Berlin. 'Lust for Life' and 'The Idiot' are the records history and critics remember most, and in 1996 when Danny Boyle featured the title track in his film 'Trainspotting', it catapulted Iggy Pop back into the spotlight. But let's not forget, Iggy never truly left. He consistently released albums every few years - 'No Fun', 'Soldier', 'Blah Blah Blah', 'Brick by Brick'. Live albums, EPs, you name it. Iggy Pop is nothing if not prolific, but none of these albums quite resonated with the public, and by 'Brick by Brick', it seemed like he was trying too hard to be relevant. Maybe it was the music's struggle to stay relevant that stood out. When inspiration and ideas wane, you bring in the metal. In 1982, just five years after their initial release, RCA reissued 'Lust for Life' and 'The Idiot' as a 2 LP set. They were that good, they were a pair, and nothing else Iggy Pop did before or after shone quite as brightly. Now, for true music fans, there's more to Iggy Pop's catalog, and having history recognize even two of one's recordings is more than most can ask for. But I believe there's more to be discovered. The true historian, musicologist, or music fan tries to go beyond what's in the history books, i.e., Top 100, 1000, Best Ever! lists. Iggy Pop isn't a solo artist; his work is a collaboration with others, and the success comes from the strength of that collaboration. James Williamson, the Asheton brothers, Bowie, and let's not forget Chris Stein. The founder and one of the leaders of Blondie, Chris Stein, brings his unique intensity and refinement to Iggy Pop's raw energy. The music is tight, well-crafted, even polished in its own way. These are the traits of pop that Stein infused into the shimmering, sensuous, and funky vibe of Blondie. On 'Zombie Birdhouse', you can hear similar dancing rhythms and chiming guitars characteristic of 80's new wave and post-new wave. It growls and throbs, it's persistent and insistent. The cover photo, of a laid-back Iggy relaxing at an outdoor cafe somewhere in the Caribbean, echoes the mood of the tunes, as well. The music is the sound of men possessed, or seeking to be, prowling through a Caribbean night. Humidity, darkness, spirits of lust, voodoo, pulsing urgency. 'There are no synthesizers on this record,' is written toward the end of the credits, and it says a lot about this album. In 1982, synthesizers were dominating music, influencing the tone, style, and direction. Those synthetic sounds lent themselves to creating music more about texture and rhythm. Stein and Iggy stick to their guitars and kick drums in pure Luddite fashion, pulling tones and textures out of their instruments that no one expected. That proclamation also hints at a set of songs that take us on a journey, send us to a mysterious, maybe sinister place. This is a record that is more than the sum of its parts. 'Zombie Birdhouse' is an album that, for many reasons, deserves recognition not only from Iggy Pop fans but from those who defer to the canon and help make it. It's a high point in the artist's career, one of the few where he captured what made an LP like 'Lust for Life' work so well. It's the work of an artist(s) on a journey, a journey that is penetrating, that offers insight, an epiphany. It pulses like a dance record, stirs deeper waters like a Bauhaus record, and holds together like a classic it deserves to become.
