I'm torn between this album and "The Idiot" when it comes to my favorite Iggy Pop record, as both are phenomenal yet distinctly unique. This one's far more refined and laid-back compared to the previous two (excluding "Kill City"). James Williamson's production is top-notch, though it's intentionally raw—no reverb or effects, just a stark, dry sound that somehow works perfectly. I've owned the same copy for nearly a decade, and the story behind it cracks me up. Back in 2016, my parents and I visited Denver, and my dad and I stopped by a comic book shop. Outside, a homeless guy was selling records (or maybe he'd swiped them, who knows?). We picked up this album, a Clash compilation, a beat-up copy of The Beatles' "Let It Be," and possibly a promo of Willie Nile's debut. I've never spotted another original copy since, which makes my purchase even funnier. The tracks here are fantastic. The first four could easily stand alone as an EP, they're that good. "5 Foot 1" is another standout for me. Every other song is brilliant, though "African Man" weirdly makes me squirm for some reason. Still, the songwriting is excellent and perfectly captures the era. So, if you come across a copy, grab it. You might not buy it from a homeless guy, but you won't regret the purchase.
First off, I'd give 5 stars for the audio quality and the cool vinyl color design. Really blown away by this company. The Willie Nelson - Yesterday's Wine release also sounded and looked amazing. The rating drops for the track "African Man". Honestly, what more can be said about that song that hasn't been already? It's so incredibly offensive and wrong on so many levels; if he hasn't apologized yet, he really should. That song totally ruins the whole album for me, but apart from that, it sounds great but not quite as legendary as the first 3 Stooges albums (no joke).
Wow, Suzy, the audio quality is absolutely stunning. It's like high-definition sound! The clarity is top-notch, with drums that pack a serious punch, vocals that are crystal clear, and guitars that cut through beautifully. The overall sound is big and bold. The pressing is super quiet too, no issues at all. "The Endless Sea" is a standout track, really enjoyable.
