The record I received (a fantastic Christmas gift from my brother) is absolutely flawless: smooth and free from any surface imperfections. I also own the 2016 version on black vinyl, but to my ears, this one plays even better! I've ultrasonically cleaned it, just like I always do with all the vinyl in my collection, even when they're new and sealed!
I thought about picking up the new reissue, but after giving this pressing another spin, I don't see the need. It still sounds incredible. Kudos to my younger self for looking after it pretty well.
After a long time, I've just given this a listen again. It's still among the top. I'm not sure how I ended up with this New Zealand copy while being in the UK, but it still sounds amazing.
Absolutely worth the cash if you don't end up with a dud copy. My copy has no obvious surface noise during playback, just a few minor clicks on some of the later records in the set, not sure if it's a record flaw or just new record dust. So I'd say I got pretty fortunate compared to others. I'd still probably steer clear of new US copies if you're looking for this, if you can drop $200+ on a box set you can likely afford to spend a bit more on an import copy and have a lesser chance of problems.
I'm a big fan of the Atmos mix, but it's a letdown that the 5.1 and 4.0 Quad mixes are only available in LPCM format. Like so many people these days, my audio source needs to go through a TV to reach my multichannel soundbar, and TVs capable of handling multichannel PCM are few and far between. I could dust off my old receiver and set up my 5.1 system, but seriously? All that hassle when they could've just included the 5.1/4.0 mixes as Dolby TrueHD files? I mean, the Atmos mix is encoded that way, so why the random format switch? Once more, technical nitpicking ruins what should be a straightforward experience for the consumer.
