Product description

The Velvet Underground's second album, "White Light / White Heat," is a raw and unfiltered dive into the world of proto-punk and art rock. Released on January 30, 1968, under the Polydor label, this album is a mere 40 minutes long but packs a powerful punch with its six tracks. The album opens with the title track, "White Light/White Heat," setting the tone for the gritty and intense journey that follows. "The Gift" offers a unique narrative experience, while "Lady Godiva's Operation" and "Here She Comes Now" showcase the band's ability to blend experimental sounds with catchy melodies. The album closes with the epic "Sister Ray," a 17-minute exploration of noise and chaos that has become a cult favorite. This album is a testament to The Velvet Underground's innovative spirit and their influence on future generations of musicians.

This 2008 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

  • Velvets Raw Sound Satisfies

    4 out of 5 stars
    Chiukgyom-8December 31, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

This album often gets a lot of criticism on Discogs, but honestly, I don't think it's any worse than the early Verve copy I owned way back in the day, around 1970. It's never been known for its high-fidelity sound, as the Velvets pretty much produced it themselves while Tom Wilson was focused on other things. Sure, it's distorted—all the needles were in the red as the Velvets aimed to recreate the sound of a live performance. They didn't really know what they were doing, but they definitely captured something unique. I might be wrong, but I don't recall the original sounding much better than this. Maybe one day I'll get an old pressing, compare them, and then update this review. Until then, I'm more than satisfied with this version. Just so you know, I'm playing it on a Rega Planar 3 turntable with a Goldring black cartridge.

  • Unique Matrix Code Details

    4 out of 5 stars
    Zkonxi84December 10, 2025United States🇺🇸

I've got this particular pressing, and it's got a unique Matrix / Runout code that's a bit different: Side A shows 2353024 A//1▽420 I1 19 04, and Side B has 2353024 B//1▽420 I1 91 04. After the 420, there's a line that looks like a flipped 1 on my record. I've seen a similar Matrix / Runout code mentioned for this release, like on "White Light/White Heat" by The Velvet Underground.

  • East Coast Skull Edition

My East Coast version is identical in every aspect, with ONE difference - there's a Skull Tattoo on the front cover.

  • Bonus Clips and Blue Vinyl

    5 out of 5 stars
    TedyhDinehNauwYojlNovember 26, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

The bonus clips are awesome and offer a fun, personal glimpse into the band's dynamic, even catching them chuckling during a track. The shade of the blue vinyl is stunning. The pressing quality is solid, though I did need to give it a thorough cleaning to get rid of some dust. The audio mastering sounds well-balanced and warm.

  • Fantastic Reissue with Extra Tracks

    5 out of 5 stars
    Xuz_HgdziNovember 24, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

This reissue is absolutely fantastic. It's likely the best this album will ever sound. Plus, the extra disc has some amazing tracks on it.

About The Velvet Underground

The Velvet Underground, formed in New York City in 1964, are an American rock band renowned for their experimental and influential music that transcended conventional boundaries. Led by the iconic Lou Reed and featuring the talents of John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Moe Tucker, the band's provocative lyrics and avant-garde sound laid the groundwork for punk rock, new wave, and alternative music. Their association with Andy Warhol and the New York art scene further cemented their status as cultural pioneers. With a legacy defined by their pioneering approach to rock music, The Velvet Underground's impact resonates through their experimental sound and provocative lyrics, making them one of the most influential bands in rock history. Their debut album, featuring the German singer Nico, is considered a cornerstone of rock and pop music, blending elements of avant-garde, experimental, and proto-punk styles. The band's story is vividly chronicled in the 2021 film "The Velvet Underground," directed by Todd Haynes, which offers a deep dive into their incandescent world and enduring legacy.
