Incredible album. The sound quality is phenomenal, especially considering this band was never properly captured on record.
This is the identical bonus album that came with the white VU box set from the mid-80s. It's packed with tracks that didn't make it onto the original VU album.
Needless to say, this isn't just any haphazard assortment of unused tracks: it's a compilation of Velvet Underground outtakes, and that's what sets it apart. This band exuded an odd enchantment that made their contemporaries sound bland in contrast and was never matched during the punk era's peak...and even here, amidst the three (yes, three) instrumentals and the messy alternate version of the haunting, John Cale-driven 'Hey Mr. Rain', that allure is apparent. (You also get 'We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together', which Lou Reed later revised for his groundbreaking solo album "Street Hassle", and a hesitant early take of the iconic 'Rock and Roll'.) Enjoying demos, discards and studio warm-ups has never been this entertaining. Three and a half stars.
