Poor quality pressing. There's a ton of surface noise with really loud pops and clicks, even after I cleaned it really well. Plus, my copy has the 2009 stereo mix, even though it says "Original 1973 mix" on the label. Wouldn't suggest this one.
More of a novelty, really- the instrument balance is so different from the original that it often highlights the wrong tune. It was mixed in just three days, while the original stereo mix took weeks. Engineer Phil Newell played this version for Mike Oldfield, who listened to the whole thing and then left without saying a word- speaks volumes, doesn't it!
Here's the album that truly put Mike Oldfield on the map. Created when he was merely a teen, utilizing various instruments and a multi-track recorder, it highlights his incredible musical prowess in both creating and performing. Being essentially a home-recorded piece, the sound quality isn't as refined as in his subsequent albums (and remixes), but it's still quite enjoyable. This edition includes Viv Stanshall as the Master of Ceremonies. It's a remastered take, boasting a much clearer, richer sound with improved dynamics.
At the time of this review, I'm over 48! My newly bought copy still sounds sharp and clear. What a fantastic piece of music!
Incredible pressing! I never knew the first master of tubular-bells could ever sound this amazing!
