Gorgeous record pressing. Every vinyl should sound this crisp and rich. Way more lively than my CD. Super clean, no surface noise, not a single click or tick. Just flawless!
The vinyl record weighs in at 180 grams, just as it says on the front label, and it comes with a download code and a poster. The album's sound quality is spot on.
While my copy isn't 180gm, it's perfectly flat and quiet, so I'm sticking with it. Better to stick with what you know, right? Actually, it reminds me more of those classic LPs from the 70s and early 80s - you know, with the indented label and that slightly bendy vinyl with rounded edges. Honestly, I wish more records today were like this one. EDIT: Oh, and that m4a download was a real letdown, super dull and flat. I made the mistake of listening to it before the vinyl and it nearly ruined the whole album for me. The vinyl, though? It's got so much more life to it.
When Mike Oldfield revealed that a new album was on the way, we were all genuinely thrilled. Upon discovering it was titled Return To Ommadawn, feelings were likely a bit all over the place. To tackle his magnum opus and somehow surpass it takes guts, serious guts, when you're as accomplished as Mr. Oldfield. The bar was set high, and I think most folks doubted he could even come close to something deserving of the Ommadawn name. Those people were dead wrong. This album is an absolute triumph. I gave it four spins on the first day alone, checking out the digital stereo, the surround mix, and the vinyl. Each one sounds fantastic, but the clarity and natural tone of the vinyl is just unbeatable. It's a stunning press, perfect. The surround mix blew me away, it was expertly done, and you can tell that effort was put into placing the different sounds across the tracks. Super clean sound and a wide soundstage, with an incredibly impressive bass presence. But setting formats aside, what about the music? It's a grower. The initial listen was quite enjoyable. It's classic Mike Oldfield, yet it's both the old him and the modern him. There are parts that feel a bit too slow and almost dull, but when the killer parts hit, they're absolutely amazing in comparison. Explosive, surprising, in-your-face twists, classic Oldfield style! I highly recommend this album, it's in my top 5! After many listens, I've got to say that the surround mix is the best. I haven't touched the vinyl since I got it, but the 5.1 mix I pull out every now and then. I just adore it! Unbelievable sound quality, and actually being inside the music is pretty incredible. Stunning mix!
