Product description

Stanley Turrentine's "The Spoiler" is a vibrant journey through the world of jazz, blending hard bop, soul jazz, cool jazz, and bebop into a cohesive and dynamic collection. Originally released in 1966 and reissued in 2007 by Blue Note Records, this album features seven captivating tracks that showcase Turrentine's mastery of the saxophone. The Rudy Van Gelder Edition ensures top-notch audio quality, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the intricate details of each performance.

Arranged by the legendary Duke Pearson, "The Spoiler" benefits from a particularly responsive big band lineup, adding depth and richness to the music. The album opens with "The Magilla," a lively and engaging piece that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Standout tracks like "When The Sun Comes Out" and "Sunny" highlight Turrentine's soulful and sophisticated tone, while "La Fiesta" brings a touch of Latin jazz to the mix. The album also includes the beautiful ballad "Maybe September (Theme From 'The Oscar')" and the poignant "Lonesome Lover," demonstrating Turrentine's versatility and emotional range.

With a running time of just under 40 minutes, "The Spoiler" is a concise yet impactful album that showcases Stanley Turrentine's exceptional talent and the brilliance of his collaborators. Whether you're a longtime fan of jazz or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

This is a 2009 Reissue released as a LP.

  • Van Gelder's Turrentine Triumph

    5 out of 5 stars
    HwahnfDecember 5, 2025United States🇺🇸

As always, this Van Gelder recording is impeccable and makes it feel like the band is performing right there with you. Sonny's contribution alone would make this my top pick for a Stanley Turrentine album, but the rest of the tracks are equally outstanding. I'm hoping they'll give this the Tone Poet treatment eventually, and, in my view, it would've been a better pick than Rough n tumble.

  • Van Gelder's Perfect Turrentine

    5 out of 5 stars
    WjiycsAugust 20, 2024United States🇺🇸

As expected, this Van Gelder recording is perfect and makes it feel like the band is right there with you. Sonny's playing alone would make this my top Stanley Turrentine album, but the rest of the tracks are just as amazing. I'm hoping they'll give this the Tone Poet treatment someday and, in my view, it would've been a better pick than Rough n Tumble.
