Product description

Stanley Turrentine's "Rough 'N Tumble" is a soulful journey through the vibrant landscape of jazz, blending hard bop, cool jazz, and bebop into a cohesive and dynamic whole. Originally released in 1966 and remastered in 2000, this album showcases Turrentine's mastery of the saxophone and his ability to infuse each track with a deep, bluesy groove that captivates from start to finish. Recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, the album's six tracks are a testament to Turrentine's prowess and the enduring appeal of soul jazz.

The album opens with "And Satisfy - Remastered 1997," setting the tone with a lively and energetic rhythm that draws the audience in. "What Would I Do Without You - 1999 Remastered" follows, offering a more introspective and melodic exploration of the saxophone. "Feeling Good" is a standout track, showcasing Turrentine's ability to convey a range of emotions through his instrument. "Shake - Remastered" brings a sense of playfulness and dynamism, while "Walk On By" offers a smooth and sultry interlude. The album concludes with "Baptismal - Remastered," a powerful and soulful finale that leaves a lasting impression.

With a duration of just 37 minutes, "Rough 'N Tumble" is a concise yet impactful collection of tracks that highlight Stanley Turrentine's unique style and contributions to the jazz genre. Whether you're a longtime fan of Turrentine or a newcomer to his music, this album is a must-listen that showcases the best of his soulful and dynamic approach to jazz.

This 2022 Reissue LP is housed in a gatefold, pressed on 180g vinyl.

  • 66 Pressing Sounds Fantastic

I was initially eyeing the Tone Poet version, but then I came across this '66 pressing first. It sounds absolutely fantastic if you can get a hold of a clean copy!

  • Pressing Flat, Music Meh

Pressing is flat and quiet, great artwork and packaging. But musically, it's just meh, in my opinion.

  • Tone Poet's Best Vinyl

    VoneeLigdimJune 7, 2025United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

This vinyl release is absolutely fantastic. It's perfectly flat, has minimal noise, and the sound quality is stunning. So far, it's the best one I've gotten from Tone Poet!

  • Soul Jazz Delight

    4 out of 5 stars
    iuhtsiakoMarch 28, 2025United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

This album sounds fantastic and the vinyl is in pristine condition. There are plenty of jazz purists who turn their noses up at soul jazz records like this one, but while they're busy listening to Unit Structures, I'll be enjoying this gem. Pair it with your drink of choice and have a great time.

  • Sound Grows on Listens

    5 out of 5 stars
    nfaatazzcegJanuary 27, 2025United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

The sound quality is low and lacks depth. After just one playthrough, the music didn't really grab me, but I think with a few more listens, it'll have me hooked like many other Blue Note albums.
