  • Rap Over Trip-Hop

    2 out of 5 stars
    tednunmufOctober 22, 2025United States🇺🇸

As a rap record, it's decent. It's superior to Lil Wayne or comparable stuff. Clearly, most folks aren't expecting rap on this album, they're after trip-hop. In that sense, this one might let you down. "Entroducing" had that mesmerizing slow-tempo vibe that got you thinking, got you pondering, and got you looking within. This one's more market-friendly and smells like mainstream hip-hop. But it could be a lot worse - at least the MCs here have some skill with words.

  • Shadow's Inconsistent Hyphy Shift

    3 out of 5 stars
    fciutfzedMarch 31, 2025United States🇺🇸

DJ Shadow takes a turn towards the hyphy scene! _The Outsider_ marks a shift in his musical style, even though the spoken word intro hints at something dark and "This Time" is a bright, uplifting funk track. But "3 Freaks" brings in the hyphy pioneer, Keak Da Sneak, for a gritty hip-hop experience that's all about partying rather than head-bobbing. This vibe carries on throughout most of the album. "Seein Things" adopts a more aggressive tone, critiquing the government's bungled handling of Hurricane Katrina, leading into the bluesy "Broken Levee Blues" with its electric guitar riffs. After some more filler, "Triplicate/Something Happened That Day" brings back the essence of what made DJ Shadow (almost) famous. From there, the album takes on an indie rock flavor, with tracks like "The Tiger" and "Erase You." Christina Carter's soft voice elevates "What Have I Done." And if "You Made It" sounds eerily like a Coldplay tune... well, I'd put that on Chris James. But suddenly, "Enuff" brings the hip-hop back, though it's not as harsh as the hyphy of the earlier tracks. I won't even touch "Dats My Part." It's a frustratingly inconsistent album, but maybe it's unfair to expect DJ Shadow to keep replicating _Endtroducing_. I'm curious to see where he goes from here.

  • Mainstream Hip-Hop Misses Mark

    2 out of 5 stars
    xuzqukqulFebruary 7, 2025United States🇺🇸

As a rap record, it's solid. It tops Lil Wayne and the like. But let's face it, folks aren't buying this for rap, they're after that trip-hop vibe. So, if that's what you're after, this might not hit the mark. 'Entroducing' had this mesmerizing slow beat that got you thinking, reflecting, you know? This one's more mainstream, smells like typical hip-hop. But hey, it could be worse - these rappers at least know how to string words together.

  • Mixed Bag, Great Tracks

    4 out of 5 stars
    Feol-SukoziJanuary 24, 2025United States🇺🇸

This one's a bit of a mixed bag, with not much care put into how the songs are ordered. But there are some really great tracks in there. It's way better than people say it is.

  • Mixed Bag of Hits

    4 out of 5 stars
    Hiug-RenafeJanuary 11, 2025United States🇺🇸

this one's a bit of a mixed bag, with not much care put into the order of the songs. But there's a good number of really great tracks in here. It's way better than people say it is.
