DJ Shadow ought to have merged CD2 (Vocal Suite) with some of the standout tracks from CD1, like "Slingblade" and "Firestorm," into a single album. Apart from a few tracks, the Instrumentals disc feels like a bit of a slog to listen to. It's disappointing that a DJ Shadow release has so much filler material. On the bright side, the Vocal disc is fantastic. It's odd that "Systematic (feat. Nas)" was re-released as a bonus track here, considering it was part of the Mountain Will Fall sessions and already appeared on the Mountain Has Fallen EP. Plus, the digital bonus tracks (like "Been Use Ta [feat. Pusha T]" as another reviewer mentioned) aren't included on the CD. It's baffling what the decision-makers were thinking when they put this together.
Okay, so when it comes to style, it's kind of all over the map. The first and second parts of the album are pretty distinct. The first one's a bit darker, more into that electro sound, and it reminds me a bit of El-P's stuff (though, gotta admit, El Producto nails those sci-fi beats even better). Heck, there's even some breakcore in there ("Juggernaut")! The second disc, though, it's got that old-school hip hop feel that you don't hear much these days. That track with De La Soul, which I think is one of the best, sounds so 90's. Honestly, I can't decide which disc I like more, 'cause both have their highs and lows.
The recording quality is spot on. The crowd can be quite loud. But because of the music style, it's not bothersome.
