I got this sealed up, but I'm really struggling with it skipping.

  • Inaccurate Song List

The song list isn't accurate. "Take a rest" is the opening track on one side, and "Step in the arena" starts the other side.

  • Gang Starr's Flawless Debut

Incredible, no one's chiming in on this flawless album, am I truly the only one with the honor? I can recall the exact day and even the spot in the store where I first discovered my copy of this masterpiece. This is the first genuine Gang Starr album, as 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' was more of a scattered collection of diverse tracks, some not even recorded together. This record, however, had a clear purpose and was much more thoughtfully conceived as a complete work. In other words, the chemistry between Guru and Premier truly solidified right here. Here, in my view, is also where you can truly witness Primo's production style come into its own, even though he'd already had credits like with Lord Finesse. Just with the intro of 'Name Tag', the mood-setting with a simple chopped loop as an introduction is quintessential Gang Starr, and really stands out for that era. The tempos aren't as intense as on 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' but still several tracks keep the energy up as it was 1990, but most notably the approach is far more concentrated. Tracks like 'Just To Get A Rep,' 'As I Read My S-A,' 'Step In The Arena,' and the still-ripping 'Check The Technique' prove that this newly-reformed duo meant business. The heads nod, the lyrics pack a punch, and the beats (many of which became iconic) are just beautifully efficient. I think most people first encounter this group with the next album and its more intense, slower wordplay and Gang Starr Foundation guest stars, but overlooking 'Step In The Arena' would be a huge oversight. This is the essential starting point to understand this massively influential and just downright professional rap group.
