Daily Operation - Gang Starr

Product description

Gang Starr's "Daily Operation" is a seminal work in the East Coast hip hop canon, marking the duo's third studio album and a pivotal release in their discography. Dropping on May 5, 1992, via Chrysalis/EMI Records, this 53-minute masterclass in boom bap showcases Gang Starr's signature blend of jazz-infused beats and sharp lyricism. The album features standout tracks like "The Place We Dwell," "Ex-Girl to Next Girl," and the fan-favorite "The Illest Brother," each offering a unique perspective on urban life and the hip hop scene of the early '90s.

"Daily Operation" is a testament to Gang Starr's prowess as lyricists and producers, with Guru's flow and Big Shug's production creating a cohesive and engaging listening experience. The album's political undertones and introspective lyrics, as heard in tracks like "Soliloquy of Chaos" and "Conspiracy," highlight the duo's ability to address social issues while maintaining their distinctive style. The album's release was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number 65 on the Billboard 200 chart.

With its timeless production and thought-provoking lyrics, "Daily Operation" remains a staple in the hip hop community, appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers alike. The album's influence can still be heard in the work of contemporary artists, cementing Gang Starr's legacy as one of the most innovative and impactful duos in hip hop history.

This 2024 Limited Edition Reissue 2LP set is pressed on Red vinyl.

  • Seeking Press Quality Feedback

Has anyone got this press? Would love to hear thoughts on its quality and how it sounds. Thanks a bunch!

  • Jazzier 90s Hip-Hop Gem

    5 out of 5 stars
    njjudif8636May 1, 2025United StatesđŸ‡ș🇾

To start with, this is a pretty good vinyl pressing for a 90's hip-hop record; I'd reckon it's noticeably better than what you'd typically find. Moreover, the music is absolutely breathtaking. I've always had a soft spot for 'Step In The Arena', but giving this a spin again today, I'd argue this one edges it out slightly with its jazzier samples and whatnot. Guru shines here, seamlessly blending social commentary and boastful lyrics with finesse. He was always up there with my favorite rappers, alongside a few others who didn't get the recognition they deserved (or at least, not back then) like Ice-T, Q-Tip, MC Eiht. Not too sure about 'Conspiracy', but I'll overlook that one! 5/5 for the album, 4/5 for the pressing (considering it's from the 90's).

  • No Issues, No Complaints

After finally getting to listen to both discs, I didn't come across any issues or inconsistencies with my copy. In terms of volume, I matched it up with the 2014 lenticular cover version and it was pretty much the same. Honestly, no complaints from me.

  • Uncommon but Overpriced Classic

    5 out of 5 stars
    nicwavaqiApril 10, 2025United StatesđŸ‡ș🇾

Quite an uncommon drop and honestly not worth the price tag, which sits around $100 - 150. The bonus track is exclusive to this edition, featuring the extended 12" version (only 10 seconds, but still) with horns from the "Horny Instrumental" during the chorus and some echo effects on the vocals at different spots than the original. It's more for the collectors out there, but it's a classic with the b-side that didn't make it onto the original LP as a bonus. Dwyck really fits well on here.

  • Vinyl Audio Quality Impressive

    5 out of 5 stars
    LnujurKZJanuary 9, 2025United StatesđŸ‡ș🇾

Audio Quality is fantastic. This vinyl has way less surface noise (like pops and crackles) than my white vinyl copies of Hard to Earn & Step in the Arena
