Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Aulis Sallinen's "Works for String Orchestra," a remarkable collection of compositions that showcases the Finnish composer's unique voice and mastery of the string ensemble. Released in 1997 under the Naxos label, this album spans a concise yet impactful hour and four minutes, featuring five tracks that range from the playful to the profound.

The album opens with the String Quartet No. 3, Op. 19, humorously subtitled "Some Aspects of Peltoniemi Hintrikin's Funeral March," presented here in a lush arrangement for string orchestra. Sallinen's wit and inventiveness shine in this piece, offering a refreshing departure from traditional funeral marches. The album continues with a series of chamber music works, each revealing Sallinen's ability to craft intimate, expressive dialogues between instruments. Sunrise Serenade, Op. 63, is a standout, its gentle, evocative melodies painting a vivid sonic landscape.

Chamber Music I, II, and III, Ops. 38, 41, and 58 respectively, further demonstrate Sallinen's versatility and depth. The latter, subtitled "The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquixote," is a whimsical and imaginative work that brings to life the titular character's nocturnal adventures. Throughout the album, Sallinen's compositions are brought to life by the Finnish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Okko Kamu, with solo contributions from Hanna Juutilainen on alto flute and other distinguished musicians.

Aulis Sallinen, a prolific composer with a significant body of work including seven operas and eight symphonies, has also been commissioned by prestigious ensembles like the Kronos Quartet. This album offers a compelling introduction to his music, highlighting his ability to blend humor, lyricism, and technical virtuosity. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, "Works for String Orchestra" promises a rewarding and engaging experience.

About Aulis Sallinen

Aulis Sallinen, born in 1935 in Salmi, Finland, is a renowned composer whose music seamlessly blends Finnish national elements with contemporary techniques. His journey into composition began almost serendipitously, with his first mature work penned in protest during a trip to Germany in 1962. Sallinen's education at the Sibelius Academy from 1955 to 1960 laid a strong foundation, but his style evolved beyond the tonal music he initially composed to please his teachers. His reputation is particularly marked by his operas, with "The Red Line" and "The Horseman" standing out as notable works. Sallinen's compositions, such as "The Wedding Procession of Ilmari and the Golden Woman" and "Lemminki in Pohjola," reflect his unique voice and have earned him international acclaim. His most recent project, "The Iron Age," showcases his ongoing innovation and depth as a composer.
