Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen with his 1992 album, "Sallinen: Sunrise Serenade / Symphony No. 2 / Symphony No. 6." This compelling collection showcases Sallinen's distinctive contemporary classical style, known for its bold and often intense expressions. The album features three of Sallinen's notable works, performed by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Okko Kamu, with additional contributions from soloists Gert Mortensen, Kjell-Ake Pettersson, and Per Falck.

The album opens with "Sunrise Serenade, Op. 63," a piece that sets a serene and introspective mood. It is followed by "Symphony No. 2, Op. 29," which includes the intriguing "Symphonic Dialogue" for solo percussion player, highlighting the orchestra's versatility and precision. The final and most extensive work on the album is "Symphony No. 6, Op. 65, 'from a New Zealand Diary,'" a four-movement symphony inspired by Sallinen's experiences in New Zealand. Each movement paints a vivid musical landscape, from the evocative "The Islands of the Sounds" to the dynamic "Finale."

About Aulis Sallinen

Aulis Sallinen, born in 1935 in Salmi, Finland, is a renowned composer whose music seamlessly blends Finnish national elements with contemporary techniques. His journey into composition began almost serendipitously, with his first mature work penned in protest during a trip to Germany in 1962. Sallinen's education at the Sibelius Academy from 1955 to 1960 laid a strong foundation, but his style evolved beyond the tonal music he initially composed to please his teachers. His reputation is particularly marked by his operas, with "The Red Line" and "The Horseman" standing out as notable works. Sallinen's compositions, such as "The Wedding Procession of Ilmari and the Golden Woman" and "Lemminki in Pohjola," reflect his unique voice and have earned him international acclaim. His most recent project, "The Iron Age," showcases his ongoing innovation and depth as a composer.
