Product description

Immerse yourself in the intricate and evocative world of Aulis Sallinen's "Chamber Music III, IV, V / Introduction and Tango Overture / Elegy for Sebastian Knight." This captivating album, released in 2006 under the CPO label, showcases the brilliance of Sallinen's compositional prowess and the virtuosity of the Virtuosi di Kuhmo ensemble, conducted by Ralf Gothóni, with notable performances by Arto Noras and Mika Väyrynen.

Spanning a duration of 1 hour and 13 minutes, this collection offers a rich tapestry of musical exploration. The album opens with the "Introduction and Tango Overture, Op. 74b," setting the stage for a journey through Sallinen's distinctive musical language. The "Chamber Music III, Op. 58," also known as "The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquijote," introduces a playful and imaginative suite that dances with rhythm and wit.

A highlight of the album is the poignant "Elegy for Sebastian Knight, Op. 10," a piece that delves into the depths of human emotion and introspection. This elegy is further explored in the "Metamorphoses of Elegy for Sebastian Knight," part of "Chamber Music IV, Op. 79," showcasing Sallinen's ability to transform and reinterpret his own themes with remarkable creativity. The album concludes with the "Barabbas Variations," part of "Chamber Music V, Op. 80," a work that combines thematic development with a sense of narrative and drama.

Sallinen's compositions are known for their lyrical beauty, structural clarity, and deep expressive content. This album is a testament to his enduring contribution to contemporary classical music, offering a blend of technical mastery and emotional resonance that will captivate both seasoned enthusiasts and new listeners alike. Whether you're drawn to the rhythmic vitality of the "Nocturnal Dances" or the contemplative depth of the "Elegy," this album promises a rewarding and enriching listening experience.

About Aulis Sallinen

Aulis Sallinen, born in 1935 in Salmi, Finland, is a renowned composer whose music seamlessly blends Finnish national elements with contemporary techniques. His journey into composition began almost serendipitously, with his first mature work penned in protest during a trip to Germany in 1962. Sallinen's education at the Sibelius Academy from 1955 to 1960 laid a strong foundation, but his style evolved beyond the tonal music he initially composed to please his teachers. His reputation is particularly marked by his operas, with "The Red Line" and "The Horseman" standing out as notable works. Sallinen's compositions, such as "The Wedding Procession of Ilmari and the Golden Woman" and "Lemminki in Pohjola," reflect his unique voice and have earned him international acclaim. His most recent project, "The Iron Age," showcases his ongoing innovation and depth as a composer.
