Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Aulis Sallinen's orchestral works with this compelling album, featuring his Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4. Released on January 1, 2000, under the CPO label, this collection showcases Sallinen's mastery of symphonic composition, offering a rich and diverse listening experience.

The album opens with Symphony No. 4, Op. 49, a three-movement work that begins with the playful "Andante poco giocoso," followed by the serene "Dona nobis pacem," and concludes with the dynamic "Finale." Each movement reveals Sallinen's intricate orchestration and emotional depth, making it a standout piece in his repertoire.

Following this, the album presents Symphony No. 2, Op. 29, subtitled "Symphonic Dialogue," which exemplifies Sallinen's ability to create engaging musical conversations between different sections of the orchestra. The Horn Concerto, Op. 82, "Campane ed Arie," is another highlight, divided into two parts that showcase the horn's expressive range and the composer's inventive use of the instrument.

The album concludes with "Mauermusik," Op. 7, a piece that reflects Sallinen's early compositional style and adds a historical dimension to the collection. With a total duration of 1 hour and 9 minutes, this album offers a comprehensive exploration of Sallinen's symphonic and concertante works, making it an essential addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection.

About Aulis Sallinen

Aulis Sallinen, born in 1935 in Salmi, Finland, is a renowned composer whose music seamlessly blends Finnish national elements with contemporary techniques. His journey into composition began almost serendipitously, with his first mature work penned in protest during a trip to Germany in 1962. Sallinen's education at the Sibelius Academy from 1955 to 1960 laid a strong foundation, but his style evolved beyond the tonal music he initially composed to please his teachers. His reputation is particularly marked by his operas, with "The Red Line" and "The Horseman" standing out as notable works. Sallinen's compositions, such as "The Wedding Procession of Ilmari and the Golden Woman" and "Lemminki in Pohjola," reflect his unique voice and have earned him international acclaim. His most recent project, "The Iron Age," showcases his ongoing innovation and depth as a composer.
