PI is a collection of b-sides and rare tracks that surprisingly turns out to be one of the finest works from an incredible band. To be honest, SP is among my all-time favorite bands, and the Gish/Siouxan era, which these songs are taken from, is, in my opinion, their peak. The fact that Starla didn't make it onto SD is one of the biggest rock mysteries ever (even though it was written towards the end of the Gish sessions, BC has mentioned multiple times it would've been on SD if not for timing). Either way, PI showcases Corgan's brillianceβif I may quote the legendary Ricky Bobbyβ"piss excellence." Almost every track here is a hit (though I'm not particularly fond of Blew Away, which, apparently, the band wasn't either, as it was written and recorded in just three hours on a bet with Butch Vig). I've listened to various versions of PI on cassette and CD, but it wasn't until I heard this release on vinyl for the first time that I truly appreciated it. The presentation is stunning, powerful, full, clear, and just absolutely fantastic. It's no easy feat given the band's layered sound and heavy use of fuzz, but the production is crisp, tight, and a joy to listen to. It's not the cheapest to find, and while we can hope for a reissue, if you stumble upon one at a reasonable price, definitely grab it.
To start off, this pressing sounds absolutely amazing. I managed to grab a copy at a fantastic price around a year back. By the way, does anyone happen to have just the 7β single that came with this and would consider selling it? If so, please send me a message.
Way better than I thought! Clean and smooth vinyl, great mastering..
Apart from that awful 'Landslide' track (which I always fast-forward), this is a fantastic release - great vinyl, nothing to complain about...it even sounds better than the CD!
I recently purchased a nm copy of this record for EUR 60 during my trip to Rome. Upon getting back to Vienna and playing the pristine-looking yellow-transparent vinyl on my setup, I noticed there's constant surface noise on both sides, non-stop. It's not the kind of noise that comes and goes. Despite the overall sound and mastering being quite good (way better than the CD version, actually) and there being no pops or ticks during playback, the high level of surface noise is quite disappointing. It's bearable on the louder tracks, but acoustic ones like "Soothe" or "Landslide" are really affected by it. I'm left wondering if I got a faulty or worn-out pressing of the first Pisces Iscariot LP and was misled by its "near mint" condition, or if all copies from this press have this much surface noise?
