Nina Simone's music is truly exceptional, even in her early days, she possessed the remarkable skill and charm that would define her later career. However, this Waxtime release is just alright. It's not as poor as some other reissue labels that exploit public domain loopholes (I'm talking about you, DOL), but don't expect it to exceed your expectations.
The audio quality is fantastic on my system, completely silent and super clear. The only issue is that my CD has a noticeable warp, but it doesn't mess with the playback at all. Amazing album from an incredible show.
Terrible quality pressing: loud surface noise on both sides (even more at the start of each side). Nina Simone's work is worth so much more than this.
I picked up the reissue (4 Men With Beard) since my Colpix copy is so beat up it doesn't play well anymore. Sadly, the reissue doesn't keep the smooth flow between songs like the original, and the gaps (particularly between the two parts of Summertime) are super irritating. What a bummer!
I grabbed this record brand new for just $18. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much since WaxTime's rep isn't stellar. But hey, I was in for a nice surprise! My copy didn't have any of that surface noise people keep talking about. Though, there was this weird, low hum on one track—I'm not sure if it's the pressing or just the recording. The record itself looks as straight as can be. Sound quality? It's alright, not bad, not amazing. The live tracks have the drums and bass kinda buried in the mix, but the performance is out of this world. Nina's voice and piano really stand out and sound great. The pressing is decent enough that you'll get lost in the music and not sweat the audiophile stuff. A few songs on this live album (her first live one, and her first big concert at just 26!) were re-recorded in the studio. Those sound way better, warmer, more present. Glad I took a shot on this one. It's a solid deal for the price.
