The top pick is the 2025 MIXES in DOLBY ATMOS, though the CD featuring the 2025 Stereo Mix delivers superior audio compared to the 2009 Mix, with enhanced dynamics (tonal range) and a more spacious sound.
This Japanese pressing from 1980 is fantastic. It's not too bright or sibilant, but it really brings out the clarity of each instrument. The mids and lows are well-balanced. Lizard is such a unique album; it took me a while to get into it, but after a few listens, the results are worth it.
This atmos blend is in a whole new universe compared to the earlier 5.1 version. It's ethereal, it genuinely seems to come from all directions, every instrument is crisp, the dynamics are off the charts, you're basically experiencing the album anew, and that's quite an achievement, especially considering the previous surround mix which was groundbreaking in its time. The elemental mixes are fantastic, and the Blu-ray is jam-packed with extras. A definite must-have.
Let me be upfront, while some of these Elemental mixes can be intriguing, simply stripping the drums from this one and leaving it at that isn't exactly a brilliant idea, it just comes off as a neutered Lizard to me. At least this likely means it won't be part of the Wilson Stereo remix, so thankfully I can get that without this as some kind of parasitic twin attached to it. Plus, while I'm a fan of the revamped cover art, flipping it around has me let down once more. You might say using the old back image as the front and zooming in a bit is taking the easy way out, but I think it actually works with the slight rearranging and color tweaks, this new back is the real half-baked effort and downright terrible in comparison.
Initially, I wasn't a fan of this totally altered blend, as it strips away the drums and bass, along with other quirky bits I adore, but I'm gradually warming up to it. It's pretty much the polar opposite of the original version. Chill, laid-back, and serene. Feels like it's been slowed down a tad. A pleasant, albeit very different, listening experience. Don't expect this to be like Lizard. It's a totally different, more relaxed, reptilian vibe.
