In what became Mingus's last recording session, Lionel Hampton gathered a stellar band to perform some of Mingus's tunes, featuring the composer on bass. While not the most experimental work in Mingus's catalog, it's incredibly melodic with fantastic arrangements, including my all-time favorite renditions of "Peggy's Blue Skylight" (in a small-group, big-band hybrid style) and "Fables of Faubus". The way Bob Nelums's piano chord keeps interrupting the band during "Just For Laughs, Pt. 1" is both hilarious and truly innovative. Though Mingus is the main attraction, Hampton steals the show with some jaw-droppingly amazing mallet work. The sound quality is excellent, and it's readily available for a bargain price.
