Product description

Charles Mingus, the legendary bassist, composer, and bandleader, takes center stage in "Mingus In Argentina: The Buenos Aires Concerts," a thrilling and previously unreleased live recording from his 1977 tour. Captured over two electrifying nights at the Teatro Coliseo and Teatro SHA in Buenos Aires, this album is a testament to Mingus' enduring genius and his band's extraordinary chemistry.

The double album spans a diverse range of jazz styles, from hard bop and bebop to free jazz and cool jazz, showcasing Mingus' virtuosic bass playing and his knack for blending genres. The setlist includes a mix of original compositions and reinterpretations of jazz standards, such as "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," a tribute to the late Lester Young, and "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love," a nod to another jazz titan. Fans will also delight in the inclusion of "Fables of Faubus," a politically charged piece from Mingus' repertoire, and "Koko/Cherokee," a daring fusion of two jazz classics.

The album's 12 tracks, spanning 1 hour and 51 minutes, offer a rare glimpse into Mingus' creative process, with several tracks featuring extended improvisations and solo performances. The recording quality is exceptional, allowing listeners to appreciate the intricate interplay between Mingus and his bandmates, including the likes of pianist Don Pullen and drummer Dannie Richmond.

"Mingus In Argentina: The Buenos Aires Concerts" is not just a historical document but also a vibrant celebration of jazz's golden age. The energy and passion of the live performances are palpable, making this album a must-listen for both longtime fans and newcomers to Mingus' music. Released on Resonance Records, this album is a fitting tribute to one of jazz's most innovative and influential figures.
