This album is fantastic, you can listen to it repeatedly without getting bored. The pressing is above average, the record is almost perfectly flat, with just a couple of minor issues, it plays crystal clear. The sound is excellent, no distortion at all, the cover quality is top-notch as usual and the graphic design is well done. I'd definitely recommend it. Enjoy! This album is absolutely fantastic, but I can't really tell what's new compared to the 2006 record.
The Further Listening album is truly a delight, don't you think, even with the ringtones and that single version of Numb, which, let's face it, will never be a great track no matter how many verses you cut out. The unreleased tunes, particularly The Performance of My Life and the Sodom demo, are worth the price alone, but honestly, the whole disc is a pleasure to listen to from start to finish, which isn't something you can say about every bonus album out there. Top-notch effort all around, folks.
Fundamental" has arrived in stores: I opted to purchase this special edition (a "Very/Relentless" sort of release, but with significant distinctions). The original album kicks off with "Psychological", a decent, gloomy electro tune that was dropped on 12" a few months back for the clubs. Upon listening to the rest of the CD, the message becomes clear quickly: if you're stuck in 1984, this might just be your album of the year: go grab it. The 80's vibes are all over: even on the remix CD which includes tracks you'd think were big around 1985 (for instance, "Integral" is heavily influenced by Dead Or Alive's "Spin Me Round"). If you're anticipating the poppy Eurohouse à la "Very" or their "Relentless" Techno-ish side on "Fundamental", you won't find it preserved. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of synth pop. The little I do listen to from the Pet Shop Boys in that genre spans from "Behaviour" to "Nightlife". Highlights: Neil Tennant's lyrics are well-crafted (as usual), even though I notice some repetitive elements and/or phrases (for example, "Where angels fear to tread" in "The S&G Show" was previously heard in "Discoteca" on the album "Bilingual"). Melodically, the Boys are still delivering very well overall. The downside: The rock touch is, still, terrible. There are more ballads than I had anticipated. Some are good, some aren't. Some of the remixes are dull or just plain bad. Their team-up with Elton John on "On Private" will likely become a major gay anthem. The trancey keyboard sounds à la Safri Duo are overdone for my taste. Depending on who you are and what you typically listen to, you may love or hate "Fundamental". Since I'm not a "80's revival enthusiast", this isn't my favorite.
