With a running time of over two hours, this live recording offers an immersive experience, featuring 17 tracks that highlight Mingus's compositional prowess and his dynamic performances. The album includes both previously released and unreleased tracks, providing a comprehensive look at Mingus's live repertoire during this period.

"Charles Mingus And Friends In Concert" features a stellar lineup of musicians, including Jon Faddis, Lonnie Hillyer, Lloyd Michaels, Eddie Preston, Eddie Bert, and Richard Berg, among others. The album kicks off with an introduction and quickly dives into energetic performances of classic Mingus compositions like "Jump Monk," "Eclipse," and "Taurus In The Arena Of Life," as well as lesser-known gems like "E'S Flat, Ah'S Flat Too" and "Don't Be Afraid, The Clown's Afraid Too."

The album's highlight is undoubtedly the extended suite "Little Royal Suite," a sprawling, multi-part composition that showcases Mingus's ability to weave complex narratives through music. This epic piece, along with other standout tracks like "Ool-Ya-Koo" and "The I of Hurricane Sue," underscores Mingus's unique voice in the jazz canon.

Awesome live record! I picked up a copy from a nearby hi-fi fix shop that specializes in top-notch jazz. The cover was in decent shape for its years, but the vinyl was in stellar condition (they clean all their records). I brought it home and was blown away by the sound quality! Incredible for an album as old as me. It captures an amazing time, and the story behind the concert is a fun read, too. Mingus enthusiasts... grab this!

Awesome live record! I picked one up at a nearby hi-fi fix shop that deals in top-notch jazz. The artwork was pretty decent for its years, but the vinyl was in stellar shape (they clean all their discs). I brought it home to find it sounds incredible too! Unbelievable for an album as old as me. It feels like you're right there at the concert, and the tale behind the show is a blast to read. Mingus enthusiasts... grab this!
