In my package, there was a mix-up, and I ended up with two copies of Disc 1, which I thought was amusing. Apart from that, the soundtrack is fantastic. I specifically went for the translucent red version to match my Tron: Legacy translucent blue records.
Absolutely, there's a ton of Wendy Carlos influence here, and that's fantastic! There's also a subtle tip of the hat to Daft Punk's incredible soundtrack in some tracks... but there's also a fair bit of Disney in this mix. Whatever happened to 'Head Like a Hole', 'Black at Your Soul', 'I'd Rather Die' to give you control? I gave 5 stars for an amazing score, but this isn't your typical Nine Inch Nails record. Soundwise, this version is top-notch quality and the one to grab!
Without knowing it's for a film, you might genuinely think it's a fantastic Nine Inch Nails record. It's a real bummer that the soundtrack outshines the actual movie.🫤
Tron (1982) is hands down my absolute favorite film. While the original Wendy Carlos score is untouchable, I really dug the Daft Punk soundtrack for Legacy, thinking it was as 'out there' as Disney would dare go. But when I heard NIN's soundtrack, I was genuinely floored. Firstly, it's insane that Disney gave Trent the green light for this. I mean... YES for us industrial heads, but what was Disney smoking!? Secondly, this is essentially a brand new NIN album, and what a masterpiece it is. Even without the Ares connection, you can listen to it and be completely hooked. I'm loving how Trent ventured into a more techno/EBM direction here, maintaining a consistent theme where each track fits the bigger picture but also shines on its own. I'm getting serious Downward Spiral vibes from this, minus the guitars and some of the vocals. The vinyl itself is stunning, and I'm all about the black/red effects, the paper inserts (though mine got bent inside the gatefold, it was pressed too tight and crimped one of the edges of the insert), and the poly-lined inner sleeves. This is how vinyl ought to be pressed and presented, in my opinion. This is a no-brainer 5/5 for Oggs and a solid 10/10 for Trent. It's gonna be spinning on my turntable for years to come.
I wasn't entirely sure about buying this, but then I spotted my local Barnes & Noble promoting it at a 25% discount, so I figured why not (~$33). It's awesome! The packaging is really nice, there's a lovely insert, and the gatefold is sturdy. So, if you're keen, perhaps check out a B&N for a deal.
