  • Clapton's Blues: Good but Flawed

    3 out of 5 stars

This one's a bit of a mixed bag for me. I'm really into the music, though. Clapton's playing is fantastic (which isn't too shocking considering he killed it at the Dylan 30th anniversary concert a couple years before this, with two of my all-time favorite Clapton performances). The songs are blues staples that you might also recognize from "From the Cradle" and "Unplugged." That said, the mix feels a tad weak to me, more like a soundboard recording from the era than a proper multitrack or hi-res job. "Unplugged" and "From the Cradle" both sound way better in my opinion. Oh, and there's a slight warp on my first disc. All in all, it wasn't too pricey and I do enjoy it, but I'd have been just as happy with a CD or digital copy if that was an option.

Wow, this thing really delivers! Super powerful audio, but still crystal clear and wide open.

  • Clapton's Blues Masterclass

    5 out of 5 stars
    ZeujSiarrr15 August 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

In my opinion, the "From The Cradle" period stands as Eric Clapton's peak since his time with Derek & The Dominos... and, truth be told, ever since. From the moment I first heard it way back in high school, during my initial blues obsession, I was utterly captivated: his raw take on the classic tracks he covered, his gritty guitar sound and voice, even growling at times... it all made it my go-to contemporary blues album ever since. That's why the long-awaited release of the documentary/live recording that Martin Scorsese put together during Clapton's 1995 tour, featuring material from a couple of nights at the Fillmore West, and which aired just once on North American TV, is such a fantastic surprise and a real joy to behold. A blues masterclass from one of its most influential figures in rock history, "Nothing But The Blues" is a blazing, electrifying performance by a mesmerized Clapton who howls, growls, and wails alongside his guitars, elevating these classic songs to new heights of power and intensity, both during the electric set and the excellent short acoustic segment. It's impossible to pick a favorite from such a collection of unrestrained, passionately delivered tunes, as Clapton's voice and guitar are simply on fire throughout the set-list. But if you twisted my arm, I'd say check out "Standin' Round Crying", "It Hurts Me Too", "Early In The Morning", "Five Long Years", "Crossroads", "Motherless Child", "Sinner's Prayer", "Someday After A While", "Groaning The Blues" (that guitar tone is killer!), and of course, one of my all-time favorite blues tracks: "Have You Ever Loved A Woman". A must-have for anyone wanting to understand why Clapton has always been considered one of the greatest blues performers ever, and for all those who appreciate music delivered with true passion and fire.

In my opinion, the "From The Cradle" period stands as Eric Clapton's peak since his time with Derek & The Dominos... and, let's face it, ever since. From the moment I first heard it back in my high school days, during my initial foray into the blues, I was utterly captivated: his raw take on the classics he covered for that album, his gritty guitar sound and voice, almost growling at times... it all combined to make it my go-to contemporary blues album ever since. That's why the release (it's about time!) of the documentary/live recording that Martin Scorsese put together during Clapton's subsequent 1995 tour, featuring material from a couple of nights he performed at the Fillmore West, and that aired just once on North American TV, is a genuine treat and a pleasant surprise. A masterclass in blues from one of its foremost champions in rock history, "Nothing But The Blues" is a fiery, electrifying performance by a mesmerized Clapton who howls, growls, and wails alongside his guitars, elevating all these classic songs to new heights of power and intensity, both during the electric set and the excellent short acoustic segment. It's impossible to pick a favorite from such a collection of unrestrained, passionately delivered tunes, as Clapton's voice and guitar are simply ablaze throughout the set-list.
