Lana captivates me with her unique, bold, and witty perspective on America, beauty, affluence, and indulgence. Her songwriting is exceptional, her vocals are enchanting, and she seamlessly blends various musical styles into her tracks, from hip hop to classical. Lana embraces her allure beautifully; she's a sight to behold and a joy to listen to. I've always been drawn to this colored version of L4L, so I snatched it up immediately. I've played the album in its pure, unadulterated glory, and it sounds absolutely breathtaking. Remember Lana's intentionally misspelled Coke T-shirt? Well, this album isn't "Coke" either. It's truly a masterpiece in so many ways. The opening track, When the World Was at War, starts off softly. On some levels, it's a great test for sound quality: the clarity is outstanding. "Girls, don't forget your pearls, and all of your horses . . ." sung tenderly with that trilling voice, is utterly captivating. In other tracks, the bass is robust yet not overpowering. Lana's music has evolved since her clever pop beginnings. Considering that progression, Lust for Life (which is current as I write this) holds a special place. L4L is packed with so many brilliant songs that it's impossible to pick a favorite. For pop openers, Love / Lust for Life are both fantastic in how well they complement each other. But the album delves much deeper and offers so much more. I adore the way Lana sings the lyric, "is this the end of America . . .". It's a powerful line meant to awaken the country; a reminder of the fragility of the world's symbolic beacon of democracy. Yet, because it's sung so sweetly (not harsh punk), the song can be misleading. The lyric is confusing at first (what's she saying?!), and it makes you think. The tragic line isn't absolute despair because she doesn't sing it as a statement; she poses it as a question, urging America to pause and reflect on its standing. Democracy is an ongoing struggle, but there's something worth preserving and protecting: Ultimately, the question and the song are hopeful. “If we hold on to hope, we'll have our happy ending”. So, keep dancing . . . This soft elegance wrapped around a sharp edge is a recurring theme in Lana’s work, it's alluring, enchanting, and intelligent. Lana is rightfully proud of her song-writing skills, the lyrics are powerful, tell stories, and explore numerous themes. I adored Born to Die for the same reasons (its lavish and remarkably bold Vatican video, that tattooed guy . . .). I didn't think it was possible, but somehow Lana has grown even stronger. Venturing into slightly new territory with each album, and with certain standout albums truly shining; L4L is one of those exceptional albums. Do You Know There’s a Tunnel is another benchmark album and the tenth (?) – commendable endurance!
In my opinion, this is the definitive version of this classic album. It boasts a rich, warm sound that reveals hidden nuances in her vocals (particularly on God Bless America), plus the (superior) alternate takes on side 2. I admit, self-restraint isn't my strong suit, and I've lost count, but I think I own 6 copies of this vinyl—whoops! But this is the one I consistently choose to play.
Absolutely adore this album! I got mine fresh and unopened, but it only had 2 C/D side disks and not a single A/B side disk.
FNAC Portugal is also selling this version. The Master sound is absolutely amazing!!
Incredible. The audio quality is spot on, yet another captivating album from Lana. 5 stars.
