This recording left me feeling let down. It's incredibly dull, lacking any real bass or treble... just a boring listen. I can't believe Henley and the band okayed its release. I suppose it's what you'd expect from a "Wal-Mart Exclusive" though.
The blu-ray in Dts-hd is absolutely incredible! So crystal clear. An amazing experience.
As of September 2023, I've gone through the entire collection a third time, expecting that playing this 'fresh' vinyl a couple of times might enhance the sound quality as the grooves and needle get more acquainted. Disc 1 and Disc 2 still have that warm mastering feel, with solid bass, clear mids, vocals, and harmonies, but the highs are somewhat muted, and the percussion seems distant, which is a bit underwhelming for a Bob Ludwig mastering. Disc 3 and Disc 4 are more evenly balanced, with more energy and a fuller range, but they still occasionally lean towards warmth and miss some of that airy detail in the upper end. Since this set comes from three different shows, that might account for the inconsistencies in the original mix, but it still feels like they could've nailed it better for the whole package.
