• De La Soul Live Relic

  I first experienced a hip hop concert during De La Soul's '96 tour, and this live album perfectly captures that era. Posdnous, Trugoy, and Maseo are all at their best here. Plus, you've got standout appearances from Jungle Brothers, Common's Ice Cube diss, and a young Mos Def. Sure, some folks might have issues with the sound quality of the original recording. But hey, that's just how a lot of live hip hop sounded back then. Many artists were playing in smaller, older venues with sound systems that weren't exactly rap-friendly. The MC's vocals would often overpower the mix, and the beats could get a bit distorted. That said, De La Soul and the crowd are both on fire this night, even if the recording doesn't quite do it justice. I'd highly recommend checking out 3 Feet High and De La Soul is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, and Stakes is High first. But after that, give this release a spin and appreciate it for the Golden Age relic it is, rather than getting hung up on what it isn't, given the tech limitations of the time.

• Record Store Day Rip-Off

  This is a classic case of how Record Store Day can sometimes rip off both physical and online stores, as well as customers. On the release day, this item was priced between 35-42€. Now, it's just a single LP, and there are several problems with it. The audio quality is really muddy, filled with clicks and pops, and it's not even about the 90's hip hop genre (I've got mostly 90's hip hop records in my collection) sounding like that. It's because the label released a record without any quality check, and if they had listened to it before the release, they wouldn't dare charge high prices for such poor quality. The packaging is the same story. In a few years, you'll probably find this record for 15-20€ for sure. I mean, I'm really let down...I wish they had put more effort into Hip Hop releases.

  It's reminiscent of a collective footwear. A superb pressing of a mediocre recording. It's quite pleasant if you're a hardcore De La enthusiast, but if you're not particularly into them or anticipating high-quality production, you might want to give it a pass.
