I absolutely ADORE the sound of my copy; I genuinely like it way more than the CD. Maybe it's got something to do with the stylus people are using? I've got a ML (microlinear) stylus and it's really helped bring out the best sound from most of my records....super happy to have this.
In general, this pressing is pretty decent. I haven't experienced any hissing, just a bit of static at the start of the record. The rest of it's fine, no warping on the vinyl either. But the sound seems a tad flat to my ears, which is why I'm deducting a star.
has anyone actually used this? wanna know what it sounds like?
It's fascinating to read through all the feedback here… I reckon this is one of the better-sounding modern rock albums in my collection. My only minor issues are with the bass (it's a tad distant and prominent in the mix) and the distorted guitars tend to get a bit squashed in the center of the soundstage when the track really gets going. Apart from that, it's a fantastic recording and pressing. The vocals are pleasant and the drums are exceptionally well recorded (for this time period) – the clean guitars are deep and expansive across the speakers. I've got a bit of surface noise at the beginning of the record but none elsewhere. Certainly no harsh or unlistenable treble and sibilance. Maybe there are some faulty copies out there? I got mine on the release date too. Maybe this pressing is all-analog… the liner notes say “mastered from original analog tapes by Ryan Smith” but I suppose I can't confirm if it remained all-analog throughout the entire process.
I must say, my grey pressing is alright. I was a bit nervous to purchase it due to all the negative feedback I'd heard about the quality, but honestly, it seems to be a mixed bag. After spending ages researching, I found that some folks are complaining about terrible sound quality, while others report no issues like hissing, cracks, or warping. So, if you're thinking about buying this, be aware that it's a bit of a roll of the dice. Surprisingly, they're still available on MerchNow at the moment for whatever reason.
