• Nas' Legacy Diluted

  This album serves as a reminder of why "radio singles" are crucial, acting as a sneaky package that would make music executives say "I told you so" when rappers question why Hip-Hop albums since the genre's start haven't been filled with only meaningful tracks and no commercial ones. It's not the rumored lost double disc, just a collection of (some) of the most lyrical songs from "I Am", "The Lost Tapes", and "Nastradamus". I'd prefer to listen to all these tracks on their original Columbia releases or the various fan-made bootlegs available online. Whoever chose the tracklist for this official release should have asked some of those online bootleggers for help; especially after over twenty years to prepare. This album is "I Am" without all the parts of Nas, including the pieces that can create anthems. What is "I Am" without "Nas Is Like", "Favor For A Favor", or "Hate Me Now"? It's "I Am" without the fun, taking the enjoyment out of edu-tainment. Honestly, even "Dr. Knockboots" on "The Autobiography" sounds more like a Sex-Ed P.S.A. than a pimpology single as it did on its original release. Clearly, an attempt by Columbia to maximize profits from Nas' legacy (he left their label in the 2000's), "I Am ... The Autobiography" is a weak imitation of one of Nas' best works.

  Oh man...why would anyone purchase this garbage? Not only is it one of his poorest albums, but they also went and took out some of his most well-known tracks like "Hate me now" and "Nas is like". No surprise this vinyl edition is going for a bargain these days because it's a total waste of time and cash. What's the deal with Nas having such a terrible reissue of his old albums? His Illmatic anniversary one also looks really awful, like some child just grabbed a marker and started messing up that elegant cover.

  The A side had some pretty bad scuffs and both records were quite dirty. I thought the scuffs might just be on the surface and would disappear after a thorough cleaning and vacuuming, but they're still visible. Other than that, the sound is alright. It's not anything special.

  It's a bummer that this doesn't come with a gatefold cover, decent liner notes, or any extra bonus stuff or photos. Plus, I recall that Project Window didn't have Ron Isley on the original bootleg and had a different beat.
