Having no prior version to contrast, this still sounds fantastic overall. There are moments when the bass seems lacking, though I'm unsure if that's due to the recording or not. The pressing is quite silent, and the music is quite lenient in this regard. Equipment Used: Technics SL-1210GR Turntable, Paratrace tipped Nagaoka MP-200 Cartridge, Cyrus 2 Amplifier, System Fidelity SF-3050 Tower Speakers
Tracks 1 & 2 on my copy have irritating ticks. I cleaned it and tried again, but the same issue persisted. Apart from that, it's a solid pressing.
Among Nick Cave's finest works. It's neither too loud nor too soft, making it a joy to listen to with a pleasant and warm feeling.
Echoing what was said before, this record has a fair bit of distortion in the high frequencies. I've got a few Nick Cave reissues, and they all have boosted highs and occasional hissing, but this one takes the cake. Cave's vocals and the cymbals get all warped. It gets better if you tweak the EQ, but the distortion doesn't vanish entirely, and it's not a great listen. The vinyl pressing and the cover art, both front and inner sleeve, are flawless. If only they'd put that much effort into the mastering...I noticed that other two reissues from the same year have different stampers, so maybe they sound better. But honestly, an original press might be your best bet. EDIT: I just got a new stylus, this one's conical instead of elliptical like my old one, and now this album is actually enjoyable to listen to. The stylus design has toned down the high-pitched sounds, no more hissing, and the distortion's way less noticeable.
My album's a bit warped, what a bummer! But it's an awesome album!
