Product Description

Leon Bridges returns with his sophomore album "Good Thing," a vibrant journey through retro soul that solidifies his place as a modern torchbearer of the genre. Released on May 4, 2018, under Columbia Records, this 34-minute collection of ten tracks is a testament to Bridges' evolution as an artist, blending his signature soulful vocals with a fresh, upbeat sound.

The album kicks off with "Bet Ain't Worth the Hand," a track that immediately sets the tone for the record's lively and groovy atmosphere. "Bad Bad News" and "Shy" follow, showcasing Bridges' knack for crafting infectious melodies and heartfelt lyrics. The title track, "Good Thing," is a standout, with its up-tempo rhythm and catchy chorus.

Bridges' ability to infuse his music with a sense of nostalgia while keeping it contemporary is evident throughout the album. "Beyond" and "Forgive You" are soulful ballads that highlight his vocal range and emotional depth. Meanwhile, "Lions" and "If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)" are energetic tracks that get you moving.

The album also features collaborations with notable artists, adding layers of richness to the sound. "You Don't Know" and "Mrs." are duets that showcase Bridges' chemistry with his collaborators, while "Georgia to Texas" brings the album to a close with a reflective and introspective note.

"Good Thing" is a celebration of Leon Bridges' growth as an artist, offering a blend of retro soul and modern influences that will appeal to both longtime fans and new listeners alike. It's an album that invites you to dance, sing along, and appreciate the timeless quality of soul music.

  • Leon Bridges Loses Authenticity

    1 out of 5 stars
    kcxuabriilu9 January 2026United States🇺🇸

Leon Bridges has gone mainstream, and in doing so, he's lost his authenticity ... What drew me to Leon Bridges initially was his soulful R&B vibe on his debut album. It felt like he'd stepped right out of the 60’s, yet he'd refined that style with fifty years of perspective, smoothing out the rough edges and making it shine with more depth, purpose, and effortless cool. With Good Thing, Bridges seems content, or perhaps tries to emulate the artists he grew up listening to, like Usher and Ginuwine, aiming to shape the future of R&B, along with some Afro beats. However, to my ears, he doesn't quite hit the mark. Instead, he blends in with the crowd, adding electronics and vocal effects that feel insincere, hollow, and tinny, without bringing anything fresh to the table. In fact, Bridges takes a step back, letting production teams and A&R people mold him into a shape that resembles so many other artists, making his music feel disposable rather than timelessly essential. To illustrate this point, consider that the entire project was overseen by Ricky Reed, producer of Maroon 5, Meghan Trainor, Twenty One Pilots, and many more, who shapes them all into similar images, making it hard to distinguish one from another. Of course, I get the idea. I've been around recording studios forever, hearing artists being asked if they want to play small clubs for the rest of their lives or step onto the stage of stadium stardom. During the most significant parts of most artists' careers, playing small clubs and venues is where they've shone brightest, been most satisfying to hear, and developed a following of devoted and loving fans, where the fans feel connected to the artist and their music … no one feels connected to anything but mass consumption in a stadium. And the sad thing is, Bridges listened to those folks, and in the end, he made a rather ordinary album that won't be remembered, while never managing to step onto that big stage with throngs of adoring fans. This isn't to say that Bridges doesn't have moments on this record; he does. Yet even those are overshadowed by the tragedy of the recording studio. Just consider the video for the song “If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)”, a bit of silliness with the opening shot being of Bridges standing on a bridge (get it, Bridge on a bridge?), which instantly turns into a choreographed dance number that offers absolutely nothing for serious music lovers or those who were eager to hold Good Thing in their hands, people like me who ended up feeling disappointed, let down, and tossed aside for no good reason, other than the fact that Leon Bridges decided that Ricky Reed knew best. Perhaps for mass consumption Reed did know best, yet it's been over two years now, and we've heard nothing from Leon Bridges, while Ricky Reed is busy crafting others in the same manner, disposable elevator music that, like a sweet sugary candy bar, gives one a momentary rush, though the end result is without satisfaction. The Fun Facts: In 2020, Leon did team up with the band Khruangbin on the four song EP Texas Sun, another play on words as Bridges is a Texas ‘son’ (born in Fort Worth), though the song “Texas Sun” is the only track from that collection that rang true to my ears.
