Wow, I'm absolutely floored! This is hands-down the greatest album (both conceptually and compositionally) I've ever listened to! Each LP is incredible on its own, but when you blend them together and intertwine them, the outcome is utterly BREATHTAKING! It's sheer brilliance! You can truly craft your own "Gensho". I could dive into the specifics, but honestly, there's no need. Just give it a listen... Trust me, you'll be left without words! BUY OR DIE!!!
Individually, they're great, but when you play Boris and Merzbow together, it's absolutely mind-blowing. I didn't have high hopes initially, but I was truly amazed. It's a blast listening with two amps, two turntables, and four speakers cranked up. Plus, the pressing quality is top-notch. My copy is super quiet, which is a nice touch during the calmer bits after all that noise.
The tunes are fantastic but I gotta say, that pink/purple record is stunning! There's 100 on clear vinyl out there but why would anyone pick that? This might just be the prettiest colored vinyl I've ever laid eyes on. Honestly, wow...
To my delight, this Merzbow team-up focusing solely on Boris turns out to be their most compelling full-length release in a long while. Gensho showcases Wata, Atsuo, and Takeshi abandoning the recycled arena rock, aimless experimentation, and undercooked pop attempts that have marked (I'd almost say "troubled") their recent records. Rather, they delve deep into the exploration of raw sound, viewing riffs and melodies as chances to bask in psychedelic euphoria. Enthusiasts of intense sonic harshness might be let down by the soft, minimalistic soundscapes, but in my view, the restraint exhibited here truly benefits Boris. Highly recommended for fans of the band's more ethereal explorations, particularly those who were underwhelmed by their output post-Smile.
Today, I finally gave this a shot at full blast on a couple of decent setups, and wow, it really challenged me. I wasn't too keen on trying it unless it was a breeze, but I found myself with the chance. I used to think it was just a cool novelty, but after this experience, I might just keep a spare deck and some powered speakers handy for when the mood strikes.
