This album is a stellar showcase of masterful songwriting and execution. Josh's vocals beautifully blend with the tunes, which are both melodically rich and undeniably catchy, making this LP utterly captivating. I never find myself skipping any track, and the record plays flawlessly (unlike Sub-Pop's release of his latest album).
Fantastic deal for the price it's currently at (approximately $20 USD). The sound quality is excellent and the gatefold album cover makes for an awesome piece of art. Contrary to a negative review I read, my copy has zero issues with sibilance. The rough draft of FJM's novel included is a cool extra. The music still holds up and I reckon it's a classic from the 2010's, no doubt about it.
The sound quality is disappointing, it's quite thin and has too much hiss compared to Spotify. It's a real bummer, I was really excited to listen to this album on vinyl.
My copy functions flawlessly and plays tracks smoothly. The audio quality is impressive too. This album marks a solid start to Josh Tillman's journey as Father John Misty. Among all his releases, this one remains the most frenetic and unconventional in his discography. There's a slight dip in energy mid-album (with "Ladies Man" being the exception) from tracks five to nine for me, but apart from that, it's a fantastic record. Quite a few of these songs are still staples in his live performances today, rotating in and out of his setlists. 7.6/10
I gotta say, the pressing I got is really badly done. The vocals have awful hissing sounds all over the album, and both sides of the disc have skips at the start, messing up "Funtimes" for me. I might have to grab another copy since I love this album so much and haven't seen any other complaints about this pressing.
