Cohen and Spector: What brought these two together? Likely involved drugs and booze. Whatever sparked it, it was a blunder! Totally different folks with totally different outlooks on life and music. Spector's wall of sound buries Cohen's voice. But since Cohen sounds like he's completely out of it, maybe that's not such a terrible thing.
Having spent countless hours with Cohen's discography, I've grown to value the expansive soundstage and excellent production, especially from the '80s albums onward. However, this particular record left me underwhelmed. The mix feels muddled, with vocals and instruments all blending into a distant backdrop. The soundstage also lacks depth. Sure, I know this album isn't everyone's favorite due to its lyrics and songwriting not quite hitting the mark of his other works, but still: from a sonic perspective, this album (or perhaps just this specific pressing?) isn't one I'd recommend adding to your collection.
