Vinyl sounds gorgeous but not as amazing as I'd hoped (and it should be) - still one of McCartney's top albums

  • Paul's Finest Recent Work

    5 out of 5 stars
    zovajhux3721 July 2025United States🇺🇸

Among Paul's more recent works, this one stands out as his finest. I was genuinely taken aback by its beauty when I gave it another listen lately. Though I quite liked "New", this might just be his last genuinely outstanding album. Of course, that's just my take on things.

  • McCartney's Reflective Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    zonqvewbeq27 May 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

I've been having some online chats about the brilliance of Lennon and McCartney's songwriting and how both of them (or at least John, in his case) had this incredible skill to take a song from start to finish. That level of craftsmanship is almost, if not outright, genius. However, their solo careers sometimes lack that spark of passion, and they can come off as a bit formulaic. But even that, in their hands, can still be quite rewarding. For me, their solo work often suffers without that initial inspiration or passion. That said, both had or have had lengthy careers in music, with their fair share of highs and lows. And we should acknowledge that, even if they're our heroes. "Chaos and Creation in The Backyard" feels like a Paul masterpiece to me. You can really feel the sadness in his voice and melodies. There are albums like Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" that hit you right in the heart and mind, thanks to their honesty and the way they're put together. "Chaos and Creation" is one of those albums where it feels like everything just came together perfectly, maybe due to the right timing or just what Paul was going through at the time. McCartney worked with people who understood his background and his sound. Nigel Godrich, who's known for producing Radiohead, did a fantastic job here, and adding Joby Talbot, who worked with Divine Comedy, for the string arrangements was a great choice. Talbot's got this contemporary Baroque Pop sound, and his subtle touch really fits with McCartney's aesthetic. While Paul had some help, it's mostly him playing the instruments, and it doesn't feel like a debut solo album. When he's committed to a recording, you can tell he's fully invested in his talent and vision. McCartney's a collaborative artist, but sometimes he's worked with the wrong people, especially in his solo years. I think Godrich pushed him to excel, and I've heard their relationship was tense, but who knows if that's just gossip. What I do hear is an artist pushing himself, being honest, and using his brilliant musical skills to convey a world that's sad and reflective. In other words, "Chaos and Creation" is very much a middle-aged man's record. It's not far off from Frank Sinatra's brilliant "September of My Years." It's an album full of deep feelings but with light, upbeat melodies like "Fireworks," "Promise To You Girl," or the beautiful rumba ballad "A Certain Softness." There's a range of emotions, all looking back with the wisdom that comes with age and experience. Some parts remind me of The Beatles' "Revolver," and I can totally see songs like "Promise To You Girl" or "A Certain Softness" fitting right in. This isn't nostalgia; it's an artist working with what he's got, which is, of course, remarkable. Right now, this is my favorite Paul McCartney album.

  • Vinyl Sounds Great After Cleaning

After givin it a good clean and a couple sprays of that static stuff, the vinyl sounds real nice. I ain't got the real deal to compare it to, but I'm stoked with my version.
