This is the absolute best way to enjoy this album. The bass is incredibly powerful, but the records are quite thin.
A timeless record that every dedicated music enthusiast should own. This album was produced during a time when soul/RnB was typically made in a very structured and basic manner, often sequenced and programmed. This collection truly sparked a renewed interest in soul music during the '90s. The musicianship is exceptional, with outstanding performances on Rhodes, piano, and Hammond by D'Angelo, along with creative vocals. There's a strong jazz influence throughout the tracks, and the entire album is anchored by an incredible sense of rhythm. Another clever aspect is the instrumentation in the title track, which is enhanced by vocal samples that create a club/bar atmosphere.
I guess I’ll be the first to chime in on this pressing, and I’m thrilled to do so because it sounds absolutely phenomenal. As pointed out earlier, this 2LP white version differs from the “Respect the Classics” release as it utilizes the metal work from the 2015 “Back to Black” edition. Regardless, this record is simply outstanding. The bass is rich and weighty (just as it should be for a 90’s Neo Soul album), the midrange clarity is remarkable for both the instruments and D’Angelo’s vocals, the high end has a lively spark without being harsh or tiring, and the record itself is flawlessly quiet with minimal surface noise. I genuinely couldn’t wish for more from this iconic record by this iconic artist. Rest in power, D.
This is the ultimate version, it sounds absolutely incredible and is the top one among all the ones I have.
I managed to snag a copy at the regular price during a recent restock and I'm over the moon about it. The bass on this album is so DEEP. The vocals are crystal clear. No surface noise, skips, or pops to be found. My first LP is a dark brown color. At first, I thought it was black until I held it up to the sunlight and saw the swirls. One of the best sounding records in my collection. The records have a great weight to them and lay perfectly flat. A gatefold would've been awesome for the 30th anniversary, but the quality of the vinyl more than makes up for it. Awesome pressing, 10/10.
